When painting from photos it is important to realize that most shadows are reproduced via the camera as blacks. I recommend only painting from photos if you have experienced the scene personally and know that shadows contain many colors. This painting is of the Nooksack Falls in western Washington and I have visited it many times. The magnificence and strength of this falls is most impressive, falling 88 feet to the floor and river. I saw many colors including yellows, pinks, blues and the shadows retain dark blue but are never black.
